Well, I like them well enough

Except I think that my pupil distance was 56 instead of 55, and also the bridge seems a bit flimsy. That, I don't like, but it may be my amorphous anxiety talking.

In other news, Moonpie has completely scratched and licked up her nipples and now they're bleeding and infected, and apparently the vet prefers to do a blood test at this age, but as the blood test is $400 we declined. (E asked if I thought they judged us for that, lol, sweetie, I always think everybody judges me for everything, but that's not a rational mindset, so no, upon reflection I don't think that. We're hardly the only family to make petcare decisions based on affordability, and even if they do judge us, great, they can pay for this bloodwork themselves.) Also, NYC now mandates a new vaccine for cats and dogs. They can mandate what they like, but they can't make people follow that law. However, after the vet explained that this disease spreads pretty easily and now is spreading to humans, in whom it can cause kidney and/or liver failure, I decided, reluctantly, to make vaxxing the cats a priority. Which means full vet appointments for each one and new rabies shots as well. It's not going to be a quick process, is what I'm saying. (And we still need to replace those water heaters before they break!)

Books read in October

Flashes of Brilliance by Anika Burgess
An excellent history of the development of the art and science of photography from the late 1830s. I've worked with archival collections that contain examples of these images, but now I have a lot more understanding of how they were produced.

The Old Man's War and The End of All Things by John Scalzi
Ten years after the last book in this series Scalzi has just released another. I decided it might be a good time to read the first and last books to refresh my memory before I plunge into the new one.

Crusts: The Ultimate Baker's Book by Barbara Elise Caracciolo
A huge book (over 800 pages) I've been reading it bit by bit for a few months. Her focus in on profiles and recipes artisanal bakers and bakeries around the world. I've flagged several things that I want to try.

Accomplished Ladies Rich Closet by John Shirley
Dipping into the pdf collection of 17th c. cookbooks I downloaded a couple of years ago, this book from 1690 was very expansive in scope. The bulk of the book is devoted to instructing young women on how to conduct themselves in their lives and their households. Also, an impressively large collections of medicinal & cosmetic recipes.

A Village Lost and Found by Brian May and Elena Vidal
I bought this when it was published in 2009, but had never read it. May, a lifelong stereoscopic slide lover and collector, and Vidal, a curator who helped catalog May's collection, publish a set of 59 slides originally published in 1856, complete with a folding slide viewer. The images depict life in a rural English village. Their research identified the name of the village. Using survey maps of the area from the 1870s they were able to identify the location of buildings. May even took new stereoscopic images of extant structures. I really loved this book.

8. Have you ever collected pinecones to display in your home?

No, but I have collected a few when I have made wreaths.

Fannish 50 Challenge 2025: Post # 37: Red Green Fandom; C6D Fandom

I've got a "milestone" birthday coming up and I bought myself a birthday gift of something I've wanted for a long time: the complete Red Green DVD collection -- yep, all 300 episodes! And [personal profile] amedia made a whole bunch of Red Green icons for me (one of which you see here).

A big TYK to [personal profile] amedia for the timely icons!

if the Mississippi should wash me away

Imagine my excitement at reading this interview with Bob Mould this morning: How Bob Mould rediscovered the great, lost live Husker Du record not because of Hüsker Dü, whom I liked but didn't love, but because he mentions that Sugar reunited. I LOVED SUGAR!!! If I Can't Change Your Mind is 3 minutes of PURE POP PERFECTION and one of my top 5 songs of ALL TIME. Back in the 90s, I saw Bob live solo at least twice (once pressed right up to the stage beneath him and his guitar at...Irving Plaza? I think?), and saw Sugar in concert at least once (maybe twice?). Copper Blue is full of great songs, as is Bob's first solo album, Workbook. (Black Sheets of Rain was also good but less accessible, imo.)

If Sugar actually tours, I might leave the house to see them!

I have other, less fun, work news, but I should probably save it for a locked post sometime later. Sigh.

7. How long can you stand on one leg – is it easier on your left leg, or your right leg?

It depends on if I am trying it in a yoga class or just playing around in my kitchen...sometimes the pressure of yoga makes it more difficult. It is definitely easier with my left foot down than my right.

Well, I've picked out a new set of frames

It was a penny more than the old ones, so there's that. (But I paid for super expedited shipping, so actually it's like $40 more.)

They're green. I'm not so sure about this, but there will be NO MORE TAKE-BACKS. I triple checked that they weren't safety glasses with the things on the side, which would've been great if I was in a field where I needed those but, as it is, was unwearable, and they're the exact same measurement as my old glasses, I checked that as well.

I used the election to read In Other Lands

I liked it, but that was because I liked laughing at how stupidly oblivious the protagonist was to his not-rival's extraordinarily obvious crush on him. And also because I like most things I read.

But then, here I was, 20 minutes from the finish line, our two dudes are about to finally resolve all their deep-seated personal issues that have kept them apart - and my coworkers start a loud conversation right next to me and they will not shut up. I did, eventually, have to ask them to please stop for half an hour so I could finish my book.

Ollie's Queens joins Dreamwidth

[community profile] olliesqueens is a dreamwidth community dedicated to het & gen relationships of Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow, thus "Ollie's Queens". The community was imported from LiveJournal, it originally focused on the Smallville version of Oliver Queen het & gen relationships. Since lack of works posted to LJ for awhile and since Smallville had ended back 2011 (Smallville Season 11 ended in 2014) & Arrow ended in 2020, Ollie's Queens has since opened up to any universe Oliver Queen exists in, including comics, animation, films, and shows of course.

Doesn't matter if it's Canon ships or Unconventional pairings, or how rare the pairings are! If you write or want to rec something you love! PLEASE SHARE.

werewolvesden >> for werewolves lovers

[community profile] werewolvesden is a dreamwidth community dedicated to any fandom or media that related to werewolves or other wereanimals or shapeshifters (from folklores to latest show or film). Feel free to post your fanworks, recs, start discussions or feel free to pimp your fandom if you feel like you need to make more people aware of it.

This community was inspired by the lovely [community profile] vampiremedia ♥ I love vampires but I also love werewolves just as much and there's sooo many fandoms out there that just doesn't get the justice they deserve so I figured why not!

unwillingness to claim us

Alas, despite me getting up early this morning, the cleaning ladies did not come! They did say last time that my regular appointment might need to be moved going forward, but then I got the confirmation email for today and figured maybe that wasn't happening. But they did not show up so I emailed the company and they were very apologetic, and now they are coming on Saturday at 9 am.

on Sunday, I'm going to my sister's to make the apple pies for Thanksgiving, since my brother-in-law, who does all the holiday cooking wants to simplify* what needs doing on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, which has traditionally been the day we make pie.

*"Simplify" should be in quotes, because for Christmas, at least, we keep telling him we're good with an apps and dessert style menu (personally, I keep advocating for pajama!Christmas) to no avail. He gets about 90% of the way there and then is like, but what if someone wants ziti? or ham? so idk. He also won't cut back on the antipasto, which is what everyone ends up filling up on, so then no one wants the big meal that follows.

On Thanksgiving, I personally would prefer a roast chicken to turkey, but truly, as long as my brother brings the stuffing and there's pie, I don't really care about anything else. The fancy cranberry relish is nice, and I won't say no to a dollop of mashed potatoes, but overall, I really do only want the stuffing.

Anyway! I took Monday off since we are off Tuesday for Veterans Day, so my plan is to make char siu again on Saturday and then finally try to make pork buns on Monday. We'll see how that goes.

ao3 tag meme game

I snagged this from [personal profile] maevedarcy. :)

Go to your Works page on AO3, look at the tags, and see what the answers to these questions are. (Or any other site that has tags, I don’t know if FFnet or Wattpad does)

I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] svgurl410 on AO3 and most of my fics are on there so I'll go with that. :D

1. What rating do you write most fics under?
General Audiences (157 out of 277)

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
1. Smallville (176 out of 277 works on AO3)
2. Marvel Cinematic Universe (58 out of 277)
3. Gilmore Girls (23 out of 277)

3. What is your top character you write about?
Clark Kent (138 works)

4. What are the 3 top pairings?
1. Clark Kent/Oliver Queen (81 out of 277 works)
2. Clark Kent/Lois Lane (45 out of 277 works)
3. James "Bucky" Barnes/Sam Wilson (18 out of 277 works)

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
1. Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence (111)
2. Established Relationship (81)
3. Getting Together (57)

6. Did any of this surprise you? e.g. what turned out to be your top tag.
Most of it was what I expected - the ratings, the top ships, since I was very mono fandom for a long time, etc. I was surprised I've written more established relationship than getting together, since I thought I wrote more the latter, but I think that some of my older fics haven't been tagged properly so if I went back and updated, that might change. Then again, I also used to write a lot of flashbacks in my fics so technically the fic would have them established but I would want to write how they got together in the first place so I'd throw it in.

The code if you want to do it:
